Continuing education is always required, and EMT certifications and licenses are renewed every two years.  This requires 48 hours of continuing education over the two-year period, a 30 hour refresher course at the EMT-B level, or a 42 hour refresher course at the EMT-I level.  Re-certification of all advanced skills is required every six (6) months.  Advanced skills re-certification requires only one evening, every six months, and is almost always done on a regularly scheduled training night.

Being an EMT requires a great deal of time, hard work, committment, dedication, and training.  The job can be fast-paced and stressful at times, but is always a rewarding and worthwhile experience.  EMT candidates should talk with Rob Calhoon, Deputy Chief of EMS, at 868-2842.

All firefighters are required to attend Firefighter I training.  Other positions in the department may require individuals to attend the Firefighter II course, Driver/Operator-Pumpers, and Driver/Operator-Aerials.  These courses will require both written and practical examinations.  Testing for state certification at all of these levels is available for those who wish to be state certified.  State certification requires successful completion of the respective courses, as well as passing the State of Wisconsin certification exam for that particular course.  Firefighter candidates should contact Deputy Chief Chris Lukas at 868-2842.

Firefighter responsibilities will include fire suppression, salvage, and overhaul; Responding to hazardous materials emergencies; Performing rescue operations including vehicle extrications and water / ice rescues.  Firefighters will also be called to assist on certain ambulance calls.  The Milton Fire Department operates under the Incident Command System at all scenes.  Firefighters will also be asked to assist in fire prevention activities, which may include demonstrations & presentations at local schools and other organizations, as well as assisting at the Stateline Area Survive Alive House.
