Recruitment for Firefighter

Requirements to be a firefighter include:

All firefighters are required to attend Firefighter I training. 

Other positions in the department may require individuals to attend the Firefighter II course, Driver/Operator-Pumpers, and Driver/Operator-Aerials. 

These courses will require both written and practical examinations.  Testing for state certification at all of these levels is available for those who wish to be state certified.  State certification requires successful completion of the respective courses, as well as passing the State of Wisconsin certification exam for that particular course. 

Firefighter responsibilities will include:

  • Fire suppression
  • Salvage, and overhaul
  • Responding to hazardous materials emergencies
  • Performing rescue operations including vehicle extrications and water / ice rescues
  • Firefighters will also be called to assist on certain ambulance calls

The Milton Fire Department operates under the Incident Command System at all scenes. 

Firefighters will also be asked to assist in:

  • Fire prevention activities
  • Demonstrations & presentations at local schools and other organizations
  • Assisting at the Stateline Area Survive Alive House.

 

Continuing education is required. There are multiple opportunities for continuing education available for all firefighters. Training is every Monday at either 8:30 am or 6:00 pm.
